British Values

At Gilsland, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British Values through everyday school life, our curriculum, and enrichment opportunities.  These values help prepare our children to become respectful, responsible and active members of society. 

The four British Values are:

• Democracy - Children learn that everyone's voice matters.  They are encouraged to share their opinions, vote on decisions, take part in class discussions and contribute through opportunities such as the school council.
• The Rule of Law - Pupils understand the importance of rules and laws in keeping everyone safe and helping communities work together.  Through our behaviour policy, classroom expectations and learning experiences, children develop respect for fairness and responsibility.
• Individual Liberty - We encourage children to make positive choices, develop independence and understand their rights and responsibilities.  Pupils are supported to express themselves confidently in a safe and respectful environment.
• Mutual Respect and Tolerance - We celebrate diversity and teach children to respect people from all backgrounds, cultures, faiths and beliefs. Our inclusive school community helps pupils understand that everyone deserves kindness, fairness and respect.

How are promote British Values:

British Values are woven throughout our curriculum and daily school life. We promote them through:

• Our PSHE curriculum using Jigsaw, which develops children's understanding of relationships, wellbeing, citizenship and respectful behaviour.
• Weekly Picture News discussions, as part of our Collective Worship, which encourage pupils to explore current events, consider different viewpoints and develop critical thinking and respectful debate.
• Collective Worship
• MSSC days (Moral, Social, Spiritual and Cultural)
• School Council
• Our behaviour expectations and restorative approaches
• A wide range of texts as part of our CUSP curriculum
• Celebrations of difference cultures, faiths and significant national and global events e.g. Children in Need, Pride etc
• Visits, visitors and community links that broaden the children's understanding of the wider world

By embedding British Values throughout school life, we help develop pupils confidence, empathy, resilience and the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in modern Britain.
