Maths

At Gilsland, Maths is taught through a mastery approach.  We believe that every child is capable of being a successful and confident mathematician.  We aim to instil this belief in our children, providing them with small steps that encourage them to be confident to challenge their own thinking and extend their own learning.   This helps the children to achieve a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.  We seek to promote an enjoyment of maths and problem solving which fosters engagement and drive.

We use the concrete,  pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach to maths teaching and recognise that is not a linear progression but a means of equipping our children with a range of strategies to encourage their mathematical understanding.

We understand the importance of mathematical fluency in developing children's confidence in maths.  As part of the NNW Math Hub, our children have access to high quality Mastery of Number resources that support our teaching of basic arithmetic skills.  We promote the use of correct vocabulary within our lessons which equips our children with the necessary language to explain their thinking and justify their responses.

Our curriculum is adapted and reviewed regularly to meet the developing needs of our children.  We use White Rose Maths  alongside resources from the NCETM
