PSHE and RSE

At Gilsland we have a strong sense of community and a commitment to nurturing every child as an individual.  We place relationships, wellbeing and our school values at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that pupils feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

Through a mindful, inclusive and values-led approach, we encourage children to develop a deep understanding of themselves and others.  Our school values of thankfulness, hope, resilience, wisdom, compassion and respect are woven throughout every lesson and daily interactions, helping pupils to make meaningful connections between life and learning.

In our classrooms, children are supported to:

  • Recognise and manage their emotions with growing confidence
  • Build positive, respectful and supportive relationships
  • Develop empathy, kindness and a strong moral awareness
  • Show resilience when facing challenges and take pride in their achievements
  • Reflect thoughtfully on their choice and understand their role within the school and wider community

Learning is carefully structures but also responsive to the needs or our pupils, allowing staff to adapt discussions and activities so they are relevant and meaningful to our children at Gilsland.

Through open dialogue, reflection and a supportive environment, we ensure that every child feels heard, valued and empowered.

At Gilsland, we use JIGSAW, a whole school programme that supports children's personal, social, health and emotional development from Early Years through to Year 6.  It is designed to nurture confidence, resilient and respectful individuals who are ready for life in modern Britain.

Jigsaw brings together:

  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
  • Statutory Relationships and Health Education
  • Emotional literary and mental wellbeing
  • Social skills and citizenship

Each academic year is organised into six half-term units (puzzles)
